And it was mostly English/Literature or History where we watched them. Though we did watch some good movies in Algebra in 8th grade at the very end of the year after our final...

Seriously, it was the best Texas Bowl ever. We set an attendance record. Ray Rice set a record for most yards rushing. Then again, it *was* the first ever Texas Bowl.

Houston is definitely a different place. We were walking around, clad in our scarlet, white, and black Rutgers gear and people would stop us on the street to ask us what Rutgers was (one woman asked "What's a 'Rutger'?"). Living only a 10-15 minute drive from Rutgers, it was so strange to hear people ask what Rutgers was. Most people didn't even know that there was a bowl game going on.

It's so strange to go to a city like Houston when you're used to bustling New York. In NY, you kinda just cross when a) there are no cars coming or b) the traffic is so bad you can weave in and out of the cars and make it across before they get going again. So this week, pretty much everyone in Houston had the week off so there was almost no traffic. As we were walking to dinner, we realized that there were no cars coming and crossed, even though the sign said not to. This guy on the other side of the street looked at us like we were crazy.

So anyway...I'd get nice and comfy because the next part is a bit long...

Well, day 1 was pretty much just sitting in an airport for a while. We decided to fly out of Philly because it was cheaper than Newark. It's pretty cool to walk into an airport and see that 2/3 of the people at your gate and the one next to you (also going to Houston) were in their red RU gear. We actually met Jeremy Zuttah's mom (she was on our flight) and she thanked us profusely for coming out to support them.

The hotel we stayed at was probably only about 3 blocks from Reliant Stadium and was pretty much split RU/K-State. We went to this amazing Mexican place called Marco's. My dad and I both got a platter that had an enchilada, a tamale, a burrito, a taco, and some rice and beans. And it was only $58 for the three of us, which we thought was pretty good, considering that both my parents had some sort of alcoholic beverage.

Wednesday morning, we headed to downtown around 11:30 to check out the scene there. We ended up going to the aquarium, which was pretty cool but much smaller than others I've been to. It was totally purple and red in there, much like the rest of downtown.

We really couldn't find many places to eat for lunch. Because we were in the theater district, most of the restuarants were pretty upscale so we ended up at the Hard Rock.

Around 2:45, we headed over to the pep rally, which didn't start until 4, but there were still many people milling around the park. We kinda just hung out and talked to some people while we waited for our friends to show up.

At about 3:15ish, people started lining up for all the free stuff they were supposedly handing out at 3:30 so me and my friend Amanda got into that crowd. We ended up having to wait until 4 to get all the stuff, but once they started to hand it out, it was a mob scene there. They had Rutgers helmet foam seat cushions, which they only had ~50 of (we managed to grab about 6 or 7 of them), water bottles with RU jersey-shaped foam drink holders with "06 Texas Bowl" on them, the red football Mardi Gras beads, small foam footballs, and red Texas Bowl bandanas. This was one instance where being short was on my side because I could duck in and grab a handful of stuff and go. I ended up with about 40 or so bead necklaces, which I handed out to our group of 15 and then gave out to people around me that didn't get any.

Finally, the team arrived and Brian Leonard and some other seniors spoke, as well as Schiano. It was very short, but they had a bit of fan trivia. You could definitely tell the loyal fans from the bandwagon hoppers.

After the pep rally, we went out to dinner at the Longhorn Cafe, which was Tumulty's-type place. They only had one cook, one bartender, and one waitress that night because they didn't expect to have many people (as stated above, most of them didn't know that there was a bowl game). I got chicken tacos, which was a mistake. The chicken that they put in it was just like chicken pieces and not the kind of chicken you'd put in a taco. We walked over to the Hard Rock just to see what was up, since we heard it was shut down for a Rutgers thing. It turns out that the Rutgers Club of Dallas/Fort Worth had booked it for a private party, which was pretty cool. Who would've ever thought that the Rutgers Club from Texas would ever book the Hard Rock to have a party for a bowl game?

We then started going over to Pub Fiction which had a Rutgers party. We were halfway there when someone told us that it was 21 and over. So instead, we headed over to the Hyatt, which was where the team stayed. The entire lobby area was filled with Rutgers people as we anticipated. We walked around, ran into our neighbors and some other people from our town. The hotel was 30 stories and had glass elevators on the inside and the outside, which we had fun going up and down.

The game didn't start until 7, meaning the parking lot wouldn't open until 2, meaning our tailgate wouldn't start till about 2:30. So we went to the Galleria mall to just walk around a bit. There was so much red and purple there because people really didn't have anything to do that morning. The mall was absolutely huge. It was 2-3 stories (depending on where you were in the mall) and had a nice-sized ice skating rink on the bottom floor. We strolled around, looking in some of the stores. I got a red cowboy hat for $10 to wear to the game that night.

We left the mall at 12:30 and got back to our hotel at 1ish. We relaxed and watched some tv for a bit before calling up our neighbors, who found someone to cater a tailgate for us for $20/person, which, compared to the price of the TexFest for both teams, was a really good price. When we got there, we found out that 1) we were the official Rutgers tailgate and would be judged and 2) the cater also was doing 2 other tailgates.

At 5, they had the Scarlet Walk, just like home where the team comes in and we all line up to cheer them on and greet them as they go into the stadium. As we were standing by the Walk, we noticed that they were closing the roof of the stadium, which we thought would be pretty cool since we'd never seen a football game inside a closed stadium.

Our tailgate won the tailgating contest, beating K-State and I actually ended up in the video that they showed when they announced it inside the stadium during the game.

At 6, we decided to start walking towards the gate. There was absolutely no security there. My mom put her arms out for the security guard so they could pat her down or scan her with the wand, but there was none of that. We really could've walked in their with concealed weapons and they wouldn't have known. It was the strangest thing, especially considering that it was an NFL stadium. I remember going to the 1st and 2nd rounds of the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament at Sovereign Bank Arena and having them divide us up by gender to be patted down before entering.

The stadium was really nice. The level we sat on, each side of the stadium had a club, where they had all the food concessions, as well as some bars where you could sit on couches and watch the game on tv. The line for the souvenirs was extremely long and by the time my dad got up to the front, they had sold out of shirts, hats, and pins. We talked to a guy who sits by my parents at the men's basketball games who said that he even went over to K-State's side and all their Rutgers stuff was completely sold out. I was shocked, though, to see that they were selling the football Mardi Gras beads for THREE DOLLARS! I got 40 of them for FREE!

There were supposedly ~10,000 RU fans to ~30,000 KSU fans, though the total attendance was 52,000. There were about 9,000 RU fans from NJ and another 1,000 from Texas. We tried to make up for the difference with our ThunderStix, but most of those deflated by the 2nd quarter.

There were these really drunk guys sitting in front of us who would turn around and high five all the kids after EVERY. SINGLE. PLAY. One time, they were buying more beer and had their money out so they randomly turned around and gave a dollar to Nick, who is in first grade. At the end of the game, they told us that we "really pulled it together."

The victory was so amazing. It was the best end to a really fun trip. Honestly, the game was just one part of the whole experience. It's the coolest thing to be walking down the street and hearing someone across the street yell "R!" at you and then another group yell "U!" back at them. It's just like a mass of people walking down the street doing the "R!"--"U!" chant back and forth.

I really wanted to go back to the Hyatt after the game to hang with the Rutgers fans, but my parents said no since it was downtown and not near the stadium like our hotel. We also had a 7 am flight, meaning we had to leave the hotel at about 5:00.

It was really one of the most amazing experiences ever.

I blew off German club to attend the first meeting of the Gay-Straight Alliance at our school. It was interesting. Only about 12-13 kids showed up and we need to show that at least 20 are interested to be considered a club next year. So that was actually pretty cool.

And we got all the info about the Texas Bowl today. There is the pep rally on the 27th (I arrive in Houston on the 26th), and a tex mex tailgate party on the 28th, the day of the game. I'm pretty excited about this, because it's a great thing for Rutgers to be in a single bowl game, let alone bowl games TWO YEARS in a row. I couldn't have dreamed up a situation like this.

I was at the Rutgers Women's Basketball game on Saturday, and about 6-7 rows and a bit to the right was this person who looked exactly like Mandana Jones from the side. Except she had blonde spiky hair. Still really hot.

Just thought I'd share that with you all...

In other news...My parents and I will be heading down to Houston for the Texas Bowl to watch Rutgers play in their 2nd bowl game in a row. It should be a lot of fun. We have a group of about 40-50 people that we're tailgating with because my neighbor found a company that will do a tailgate for about $15/person for us out there, since we're all flying and can't exactly bring grills and propane on the plane.

I'm so incredibly excited.

I bought this really cool shirt the other day from the Scarlet Fever in downtown New Brunswick. On the front it says "Exit 9" (you know the Jersey joke-"What exit do you live at?") and on the back it has a little thing of the actual Turnpike sign that says Rutgers University on it. It's pretty cool.
